The new iPod touch is many shades better than the last one. It has 2 cameras and allows video chat over wifi. Something which the iChat always did. The rests is probably just upgrades of the old stuff and not as much interesting as the camera bit.

A new package altogether

Then there is the new iPod Nano. This has gone a step beyond being just a small iPod with a screen. It’s now a touch screen device with full functional multitouch and some Apps to go as well. Sweet!

More touch in less space

And last comes the all new glossy Apple TV. It’s smaller, has only the essential ports and is much much easier to hide away than the earlier version which made us contemplate buying a Mac Mini instead and having all the fun.

All the essential bits come straight out of the box including the HDMI port

The small form factor will be fun as well. The earlier one did not really fit in with any home entertainment gadgets, well neither does this one but at least it’s not big and silver. Small and Black is easier to hide. I hope Apple has given a provision to hang it on the wall as such small things don’t really stick to a table once all the cables are connected. I see that being one of the first flaws unless this weight in at a few kilos.

It's definitely small

Keyboard - Early 2000

Over the years they got quieter and sleeker. The keys got smaller and their aesthetic appeal increased. With that, the problem of dirt and grime getting stuck in them got minimized as well. (Here’s a step-by-step guide to clean the old one)

Keyboard - Current

Next to come were the backlit ones where each key was illuminated even in absolute darkness. Apple’s Power Book was one of the first ones to have them and we all drooled over it for years.

Logitech diNovo Edge

Of the recent fore runners have been the Optimus Maximus and Tactus . Featuring full and functional backlit displays under each key and a complete touch screen with customizable layout. They are made in a way to customize your keyboard for every need imaginable starting from an Video Editing Layout to a Photo Editing Layout.

Optimus Tactus Concept

It is possible that in future, the ultimate keyboard will eventually be a touch screen that is infinitely customizable for almost everything under the sun, much like an ipad, used dedicatedly as a keyboard.

i-Pad Keyboard Layout

If made the correct size and shape, this would probably be the ultimate keyboard. And yes, carry it off wherever you go with just the files you need for the day.

3M introduced this in the market in 1977, it took time and heavy marketing to catch on. By 1980 it was selling in US and soon worldwide. 3M Patent expired in the 1990’s and others started producing this incredible piece of office supply with the Post-It name and the Canary yellow color remained a 3M trademark. 20 years on since then, and we still can’t do without these, even with a bunch of technology/ software to do this for us.

The Animation Industry loves it to make Storyboards on.

Google has recently redone the image search results screen. I must say its towards the betterment but it could still be a lot lot better. Overall, it does manage to prioritize the image part and secondary information about the image is then dished out when one hovers on it. See attached Screen Shot.

Here’s what it fails to do though. While displaying odd sized images, it sort of leaves a lot of white space around them and you sort of don’t know exactly what’s the clickable area. An area demarkation to make the display more uniform with very light shade of “Google grey” might work wonders.

Also, they need to decide on the redundancy between the top navigation and the one on the left.

The Liberto “looks like” it has its basics correct. There are two touch screens, you can use either as an input device and you can use the whole thing as a conventional laptop with a virtual keyboard on one of the touch screens. Smart and ideal. Except that the device looks a little too bulky for it’s size and definitely uglier than the ipad. Personally we would prefer something thats got a 15″ display on each side to work and play with.

A concept I had with the dual screen tablets, probably some fodder for those who are actually developing these things.

This sure would be a great product to have on long roadtrips where your camera keeps running out of battery. Also excellent to charge that old laptop with annoying battery performance.
You have a server room in your multi-million dollar corporation that is generating so much heat that you have to use 5 tonnes of air-conditioning to just keep it stable, and probably another 1 tonne more to make it perform well. You do have the other option to put it up in Alaska but that might not be such a great idea for the admin guy.

And then you have a few hundred employees drinking coffee, tea and other hot beverages in another room and heating that up using microwave, heating coil, cooking gas and various other things.

It’s probably time that the heat from these machines can be tapped and sent to heat up the food that’s being eaten by people who drive these machines.

Today, in the fast developing craze over ipad and earlier over iPhone, we have somehow forgotten Apple’s first try at building a hand held computing device that did not do so well in the market. It did have a host of features including a fully functional hand writing recognition which was fairly good by existing standards in 1998 when it’s development officially was shelved.

The Newton Handheld platform was only followed by the modified OS X platform for the iPhone 10 years later.

Newton (platform) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Just a tribute to a pioneer. Not to forget what came first and where the “Pad” of ipad actually comes from. Probably just sentimental for Apple.

Almost everything outside the window has a rhythm to it, and this probably is it’s best depiction.

That apart, the visual effects part of it is amazing as well. Layers and layers of elements in matched perspective with parallax created and put together to the beat of the music. Each 3D element representing an instrument. Simply beautiful.

You will need a good set of screwdrivers with the required sizes of Allen Keys. It’s probably the smallest available with any set. Check the back of the keyboard to confirm the size.

You will need a household glass and equipment cleaner.

A soft cotton cloth, preferably white. Colored cloth can leak color onto the keyboard and do more damage in the process.

A used towel to dry off the keys.

Some tissue paper to soak the excess liquid that fall off.

Note: The usability of the keyboard depends on how carefully one cleans it. The plastic is very fragile, more so if the keyboard has been used for last 5 years in a hot and dry climate. Things may be brittle and prone to breakage.

Warning:

Don’t try this if the product is under any kind of warranty.

Do not attempt if you don’t have a backup keyboard in place.

There is a possibility that the keyboard may permanently get ruined in the process.

Use your own judgement and evaluate your own risk.

Not easy to find samples and help to work on Blender. And somehow I landed on this one. Probably the most unique concept I have come across in the last 10 years, a pursuit of sorts depicted solely by the coverage of area of two characters. The animator has actually managed to show spaces, alleys, trees, roads and even complete devastation left in their path.

Sony Walkman, the original “Personal Media Player” is probably outdated today and the brand re-targeted and populated with MP3 players and phones, but it was this machine, a small mechanical wonder that was one of the first to allow users to carry their music almost everywhere. And tapes had their advantages too over MP3 files.

First and foremost they needed to be legal, and were easy to acquire.

They were rugged unlike the CD that followed them with great quality but their reliability depended on their usage.

An album on a tape was a sequence of songs intended to follow each other in a predefined sequence, a function that lost it’s meaning with the fast paced Skip and Shuffle world of MP3.

And they had their share of disadvantages as well:

They often got chewed up until better motors and technology came in. Direct Drive from Sony was one such technology that sort of achieved this almost flawlessly.

The quality deteriorated with time and age of the tape and the player. The player also needed regular maintenance to run smoothly.

The battery life was appalling, with so many motors and moving parts the most advanced Direct Drives would just about manage a few hours of playback.

Remembering the walkman, a few images gathered from the web, surprisingly there are very few of them around.

The complete set as available in the 90's

I get these regular email from Youmint.com and I have no clue for why or what is their purpose. But today it was different, for once their mail looked a tad more inviting that the rest of them that piled up before this one.

I opened it and landed on a page. As expected it was some page with some advertisement about some holiday which I am never going to take. So I click on the Horoscope part on top left and get this. (I am reducing the amount of Junk that was written, just note the last line)

Libra (26 Feb, 2010)

“Good fences make good neighbours”, said Frost. It’s a good thing that you rubbish … … brighter than usual for you, foresees Ganesha.

This Week

Heightened activity is on the cards, this week. All sorts of activities … …move forward from your home and hearth mentality as you start focusing on the glow and glamor of both money and honey.

This Month

This will be a busy yet good month for you. … … you will head for a foreign country. Your work will progress without any obstacles and you will find contentment in your line of action. And, this comfort may easily reverberate in your financial front too.

This Year

Sorry Due to Some internal error could not load the Data

So Ahem.. What does that mean.. like there was so much data that could not be loaded. I like to be optimistic and think that all of it was good.

Anyway, for some sever error, my future is definitely unknown at the moment (also a 1/12th of human population)

Enjoy!

A few years back I got a couple of old photographs from home with the intention to restore them and get them printed. Somehow I never managed the time to get all of them done, but this was the first one. (More info is on the photograph itself and will try and upload a larger resolution version as well)

Parts of the photo were moth eaten. Out of the 14 legs of the brothers, about 9 were left when I started out. After touching and fixing most parts, the colors were done, mostly out of imagination and generalization.

There are website talking about how viable is the solar option and when do I leave it out to dry.. errr.. charge. Well, the fact that this comes with a sports kit suggests that you get charged while your phone gets charged. Spend time.. outside.

Definitely not for the regular office fellow who basks in fluorescent glow.

Off late I am coming across pages of different news websites and others that have more advertising per page than actual content. Now we all know that everyone has to make a buck or two but at what cost? Attached is a screenshot from http://www.mid-day.com/. I understand the fact that ads need to be there to support their infrastructure, but things that span over actual content blocking it is a bog no no. Could not get a screenshot without the spanning advertisement in the center, as it wont go away.

But thats not all. Then there are ads that are purely unworked on. Specially through Google’s adsense. These are ads that look like no one has spent anytime on them. C’mon guys, you would not do that to television, then why the web? Probably because Google has little or no quality check in place to control that, after all they are making money and care very little.

This screen grab is from NDTV.com, a popular news portal. See the horizontal banner ad running in a box on the right side column.

It’s been a decade to full fledged internet advertising and banners, and I think it’s time that people actually spent time and money on them rather than copying and pasting a poor quality image and adding text from powerpoint.

Now some may argue that if you do put ads, things are bound to get cluttered. Not necessarily, just see Exhibit A: Wired.com

Wired.com homepage, smart balance and placement of ads work towards building the look of the page. Quality of ads matter as well.

It’s a no-brainer that when you want to play Football, or have to play Football, you carry a Football. But then you Gym bag is needed to carry the ball and a few other things like the Spike Boots, well you cant really drive with those on and so on.

But what if you want to play football and your Gym bag was big and already carried a Basketball, a Hockey Stick, a Baseball Bat, a Cricket Bat, a Tennis Racquet etc. Would you still carry all of them to the Football field? My guess is not, you would locate a smaller bag.

At this point, some may argue that softwares are like tools and not balls, but even then, I rarely see someone putting the Soldering Iron with their Wrench in the same box.

And that’s exactly the problem with too many internet based services getting clubbed and combined together. When I want to mail, I just want to mail. When I want to edit my documents, I just want to do that. When I want to speak to someone, I just would like to do that. These are options that should be separate, not because it’s easier to have them like that, but it’s human to have them like that.

However, there are many internet based services that are trying to combine all this on to a single webpage and calling it a dashboard. It’s good, but as long as that shows only the highlights and details are well segregated. What they need to list down are the services that Need to be separate and The services that are auxiliary like chat, tweet, global positioning etc. If it’s not done that way, your user may soon find his Football and Wall Street buddies on the same dining table. Sure there can be overlaps, but not a complete one, and it can be a disaster.

What would work?

Segregate the Work and Play software (Linkedin and Facebook)

Segregate Productive and Communication software (Google Docs and Gmail)

Segregate services like Photos and Videos (Like Youtube and Flickr)

Bind all these with Social and Professional Networking software (Google chat riding within Gmail)

Why again?

It was supposed to get me updates from Picassa, Blogger, Flickr, and some more things. But initial experience soon became a pain of repeated comments and updates. Simple things are not sorted out. Things like sending me an update on my own comment. These kind of things just highlight the fact that the product or service has been thrown out in a hurry.

Then there are status messages. Which are pretty much like tweets and they appear in your inbox. Personally, I would like to keep status updates separate from emails, they are really not the same things. But it does not end here.

When you comment on a status message, the complete chain of messages as a single email update is mailed to you. It’s cute when there are 5 comments, and plain irritating if there are more than 30.

Have a few questions for Google

1. What’s the need of getting into social networking when there are quite a few of them that already work well. Why not collaborate and improve upon it.

2. Why not innovate and improve upon instead of barging in suddenly. Gmail is simply popular for its efficiency. Gmail is yet not perfect and still has a lot of scope for improvement.

3. Why so many products? We all thought Docs was a great idea. But it seems thats not getting any better any soon.

“We did not enter the search business, They entered the phone business. Make no mistake: they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them.”

- Steve Jobs, ipad Launch

And many of us completely agree with Jobs here. It’s almost like there are people in Google sitting and waiting for new products to come out which then they can “Improve” upon.

Make a product that’s needed, if it makes people go “Wow!” on day one, that’s a plus. Probably Buzz is a good product, but the premature launch of a buggy product just killed it.

The product gives detailed information about the visitors, their IPs, the country they are from including a small flag, what operating system and which browser they are using also in visual form, how much time they are spending on which page and much more. All this in a delicious visual format making the boring thing of Site Stats so much more interesting.

This post is for those who are not into CSS and HTML and normally get stuck trying to style their buttons

Every day on almost every website we come across these lovely buttons and on some we get the plain old boring default ones. We are not concerned with the boring ones, but here’s a small tip (which most web guys would know already) to style your ‘Buttons’ on your web page easily.

Lets say we want to create this.

This type of a Button is made of Two Components. The Text part, “Unsubscribe” and the image part.

But that’s not all you need as a background image. What you need is a background image that has the image for all the button states, namely, hover, active, regular, and disabled (if needed). So you need to start with an image which looks like this.

Now we get to the CSS part. Select a “classname” for your button that you want to style. Lets say it’s “funkybutton”. For that our base CSS for the button would go like this.

<style>input.funkybutton {
background-image: url(css/submit.gif);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
width: 115px;
height: 25px;
background-color: white;
border: none;
color: white;
padding-top: 1px; /* this is specifically for text alignment. adjust for your font-size and font*/ }
</style>

And an HTML part for this

<input name="submit" type="submit" id="submit-<?php the_ID(); ?>" tabindex="5" value="Submit Comment"/>

And this together should give you this button:

But we are not done yet. Now we need the rest of the states for the same button to be covered, and that’s done line this in the stylesheet.

<style>
input.funkybutton {
background-image: url(css/submit.gif);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
width: 115px;
height: 25px;
background-color: white;
border: none;
color: white;
padding-top: 1px; /* this is specifically for text alignment. adjust for your font-size and font*/ }

input.submit:hover {
background-position: 0 -25px;
}

input.submit:active {
background-position: 0 -50px;
}

</style>

Giving you a fully functional button like this:

Give it a try. (This same button is user everywhere in this theme as well)

Here’s another Tablet in the market, hitting it a wee bit before the ipad, sometime in December 2008.

Since it’s a prototype the Adam’s casing here is not what the final design will be; in fact this was hand-made especially for showing the tablet at CES. The eventual hardware will be 14mm thick (Rohan said they could even get it down to around 12mm) with a reasonably minimal bezel, packed with the 10.1-inch Pixel Qi transflective display, a capacitive touchscreen eventually capable of recognizing six simultaneous points of contact, integrated WiFi and 3G. Thanks to Tegra 2 the Adam is 1080p capable, with an HDMI port to output to an HDTV or projector, and while the OS they’re showing today is bare Android they’ve a new UI in the works complete with a replacement on-screen keyboard more ergonomically designed for large-touchscreen use.

Just like this Blog’s homepage. The steps are easy. Here is a small description into how I got this done on this blog. Why I got this done is explained first. Over the years I have shied away from commenting on Blogs simply because one has to click and go to a comments popup form or a post page, not that works just fine on larger posts where there are tons of stuff to read, tons of Maps and Images and other stuff to go through, but for a very simple day to day blogging, that kind of comes across as a lose nut in the theme, and that’s how I got around to get this done.

Here’s how.

Step 1. Open you index.php file in the theme and locate the loop. That should look like this. It should start with the following:

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

And end with the following:

<?php endwhile; ?>
....
<?php endif; ?>

Between these two parts is where your posts pop up and the whole thing is repeated over and over again depending on the amount of posts you would want to load up on the homepage, which can be set right there in the settings. We don’t want to touch that.

Step 2: Now open your single.php file and find this small piece of code.

<?php comments_template(); ?>

Change that to:

<?php $withcomments = "1"; comments_template();?>

Copy that and paste it right above the end of the loop, just before this:

<?php endwhile; ?>
....
<?php endif; ?>

This should result in the comments form and the comments to pop up right under each post. But that would also pop up a bunch of errors as each form field ID would get repeated over and over again, and that can’t be cool.

Step 3: Now open the comments.php file in your theme directory. In that you will have to locate each ID identifying each field in the comments form. Either prefix or suffix them with the following code to make them unique. The code pulls out the post ID and adds a suffix to the already existing ID after a hyphen. Here’s how:

<input type="text" name="author" id="author" value="<?php echo esc_attr($comment_author); ?>" size="40" tabindex="1" <?php if ($req) echo "aria-required='true'"; ?> />

Becomes:

<input type="text" name="author" id="author-<?php the_ID(); ?>" value="<?php echo esc_attr($comment_author); ?>" size="40" tabindex="1" <?php if ($req) echo "aria-required='true'"; ?> />

Note the:

-<?php the_ID(); ?>

added right after the “author” in the ID of the Input Field. Do this for all the fields and submit buttons. Once you are done, you are error free for most of the part. But there still remains one problem, now when the page loads, you will see all the comments form and that cant be good, it would look cluttered and bad.

Step 4: Add or Change the “Reply” button under the post, in most themes this button is linked to the post page.

Instead put this Hyperlink to the “Reply” button:

<a href="javascript:toggleLayer('respond-<?php the_ID(); ?>');">Reply</a>

By any luck, you would have already added the “Post ID” identifier to the “respond” ID in the comments.php. That leaves us with the Javascript. Copy the following code and place it within the <head> section of your header.php file.

<script type="text/javascript">function toggleLayer( whichLayer ) { var elem, vis; if( document.getElementById ) // this is the way the standards work elem = document.getElementById( whichLayer ); else if( document.all ) // this is the way old msie versions work elem = document.all[whichLayer]; else if( document.layers ) // this is the way nn4 works elem = document.layers[whichLayer]; vis = elem.style; // if the style.display value is blank we try to figure it out here if(vis.display=='' && elem.offsetWidth!=undefined&&elem.offsetHeight!=undefined) vis.display = (elem.offsetWidth!=0&&elem.offsetHeight!=0)?'block':'none'; vis.display = (vis.display==''||vis.display=='block')?'none':'block'; }</script>

Thats it. you are done. This Javascript will simply “Show/hide” your comments form identified by “respond-(postID)”. Now I am no PHP guru, but this seems to work just fine returning zero errors.

[Edit] If you are copying the codes from above in green. Make sure you copy them into Notepad / Textedit and remove all formatting (convert to plain text) before pasting them in.

There have been recent cases of people getting stuck in bus doors and the bus moving off resulting in injury. It is true that the drivers and conductors of these buses care very little, and in the stressful traffic have little to spare to do that.

But can’t the manufacturer rig the doors correctly?

Metro in Calcutta started 2 decades back and the doors would open if something or someone got caught in them and they did not shut properly. Its alarming that such stuff is not in place on buses even today.

The tech part should be fairly simple.

Detect an open door

Disengage the already electronic / hydraulic clutch (yep, they are no longer wires pulling each other)

Bus does not move.

Technology is there, it’s a matter of using it.

Back in the late 90s most websites were made for the user. And they are so even now. But the definition of the user has changed over time and become complicated. The concept initially was much like a software, “a person comes and uses a website” and has changed over time to “a person comes and accesses information”. That soon brought in the text torrent of “user”, the one’s that are putting the data in. And it soon became a balance and a matter of priority.

This is just a broad overview.

Social networking sites as we see today consider the later to be their primary user. Sites like Google, amazon etc consider the former to be their primary user.

The idea has to slowly shift to combine the both, to invite the “accessing” user to “provide” more often, and this can be done only when the “process of providing” becomes a lot easier.

Apart from that, now we have to keep in mind the 3rd kind of user. “The Bots”, or crawlers from various search engines. Yes, a site has to be easier to crawl for information as well, and easier it is to do that, the better chances of it’s visibility on various search rankings.

What’s next?

The move should be to design for the 2 types of users and try and merge them. This would lead to a steady flow of updated information (not just about status messages and tweets but relevant information). The move has already started, and personal computing devices and slowly changing sizes and shape to aid in the process. And designs have to mirror the same sentiments.

Now a days we are flooded with a crowd of short URLs that inadvertently find their way to Blogs, Posts and other such places. By nature, these URLs do not disclose the source of the content. However, once ported to a larger medium like a Blog or Forum, they need to disclose their final target. A need of the hour is to get some Plugin or Service that can either Re-Expand them to original or Tooltip them with the original URL where word limit is not a constraint.

Example: http://bit.ly/b2NoCF becomes http://bit.ly/b2NoCF (with tooltip, hover to view) or http://timeline-studios.com/blogs/2010/02/i-would-have-loved-if-my-mobile-and-tv-did-this/ (complete URL)

How it would help:

Reduction in energy costs when heated wash is used.

Most washing soaps are designed to work in room temperature, and this would allow the machine to manipulate and chose a water temperature.

Definitely green.

For the sake of redundancy, the heater part should remain. After all, we do not really get the sun shining all the time.

I did try using it to receive my emails, at least read through them or reply back but the lack of screen space is just a killer.

That’s how this thought came up.

What if the Mobile and the TV could talk. Which means I use the mobile to type and navigate while the TV did the display part. I would not mind a 640×480 display on the HD screen, but it would be larger, take less time, and much more user friendly just by the sheer size of it.

The problem comes when there are innumerable redundancies. For instance: a cell phone can be used to control a television, home theater and others thus reducing a remote. Music can be streamed to portable devices for the larger part, thus reducing the need for large data drives on them. Movies can be viewed directly on the TV screen on demand, instead of crouching in front of a Laptop to get the latest from Youtube, and all this has to get simple.

Not right now, but very soon.

Related Tweet

It seems there is a Campaign on supported by our cricketers and a popular mobile company to save the Tigers that are left in India. An alarming 1411. The Campaign in it’s true ad world way shows a tiger cub waiting for his / her mother followed by a gun shot echoing through the forest. Nice, very touching, works to get ones attention to the tigers. But is that where we want the attention to go to?

No

We need this bulk of attention to be diverted to those who poach tigers, those who buy their byproducts and those who flaunt tiger skins in their homes, including the fake ones. Logic says, if you buy the fake one, you definitely long for the original.

The bulk of the problem is their diminishing habitat. It’s a large territorial cat that needs lots of wild space. A stringent control of Human population within the country would surely help reverse effects in the long run. Maybe it’s already too late for the tiger, but the Rhinos and the Ghariyals are going to go soon.

Let’s put down some ideas wherein we can come up with some innovative and plausible solution that would actually help rather than exploiting a lone cub to market ourselves.

Do comment in your ideas. The original video from Youtube is included.

Apple – iPad – The best way to experience the web, email, and photos.

Well this might be a little too early to say as I may give in to the looks and the design of the ipad sometime soon as soon as its stable and available in India, but I still have my doubts over the whole Tablet concept.

We all wrote on a paper with pen a little more than 2 decades back when Bill and Steve started selling us stuff so that we hit keys instead of flaunting a Pen. In came a PC and then a Laptop. All that was to replace and make stuff easier for us to handle. Little after this Apple got in the Newton and we all loved it, it could schedule and recognize handwritten stuff and let you even scribble aimlessly, and then faded into oblivion.

Then came the Tablet PCs/Laptops which had this screen that swiveled and frankly thats what was the weak point. Sooner or later, they would become lose, wobble etc.

And we are back to the ‘no physical keyboard’ era again with iPhones (and it’s million copies from LG, Sony, Samsung etc.) and now a larger one in the ipad.

But the basic is missing. The ease of having a separate Input and Output device makes like a lot easier. physical memory takes care of the rest, much like the stick shift in a car. QWERTY was perfect.

Hence This. A two screen solution is probably a way to go.

Dual Screen tablet

Although Gizmodo has revealed something similar by Microsoft, I would rather wait for the Apple one.
